The album title 無用貝 (‘mo yong bèi’) is a play on Moore / Yong / Bates, translating figuratively as ‘useless value’. A throwaway comment, it encapsulates the immediacy of the trio’s playing: an urgency of sound across its 45 minutes. Yong Yandsen was the bridge in this trio, having played with Darren Moore for over a decade and having more recently built a duo language with Richard Allan Bates, and it was clear in his mind this trio would quickly find a common discourse. Captured live at Khatulistiwa 赤道, this performance sees the trio rapidly explore ideas, changing direction with and against one another while building the collective narrative.

The cover art is part of acclaimed artist Tey Beng Tze's privately produced 'magazine series'. Beng Tze has been exploring the creation of new art from old, using traditional Chinese calligraphy ink to create improvisatory images from old magazines pages. The result is a series of pictures that expand the original visual beyond its static idea and into a new conception.
